General care instructions for a new instrument

To protect your new instrument from cracking, it is important to give it a gradual "break-in" period. Try not to play it more than 30-45 minutes a day. After a few weeks, you can slowly increase your practice time.

Always swab out the instrument thoroughly after you play it, especially the middle joint socket where water tends to accumulate.

Oil the instrument regularly (inside and out), at least twice a year. To make sure the instrument is dry, don't play it for a few days before you oil it. To protect the leather pads, remove the keys before oiling. This can be done easily by pushing out the axles with a paper clip. Use a feather or something else to distribute the oil in the bore and on the outside as well. Then let the oil soak in, preferably overnight. The next day, wipe off all the excess oil with a paper towel, and use an old swab to remove any oil left in the bore. Don't forget to also clean the tone holes. Then you can put the keys back on. I recommend almond or olive oil.

Please note:  When the instrument is new, you should oil it twice during the first six months!

Now and then, after about a year, it will be necessary to re-bore the oboe, especially if the intonation of the instrument has changed. I do this work free of charge, but you will be responsible for all shipping and insurance costs.

I will be happy to help you with any questions you might have.

Have fun and enjoy your new instrument!
